Neonatal Brain Injury: Around 10% of all babies require admission to the special care unit due to the stresses of delivery. Some of these will have suffered a brain injury due to a lack of air or blood supply. We work to provide new ways of monitoring and treating these babies.
Neonatal EEG: The past research projects of the NBRG have changed the way babies at risk of fits or seizures are monitored worldwide. The NBRG has helped to pioneer continuous EEG (electroencephalogram) recording of these babies so that we can detect and treat seizures. We are continuing the use the EEG to fully understand seizures in the sick baby.
Quantitative analysis of neonatal EEG: People who have the knowledge and experience to read the EEGs of a newborn are in short supply. Prof Boylan is working with the Engineering Department of UCC, Dr Liam Marnane, Dr Andrey Temko and Dr Nathan Stevenson among others to design new equipment and computer programs that will automatically monitor the brain function of these babies and alert the clinician if there is a problem. |
